Red clay soil holds water, then bakes hard in July heat. If your grass looks shaggy or patchy, it needs regular cuts. A one-time fix won't help. We've seen fescue lawns hurt by mowers set too low. This can cause brown patch fungus in our wet summers. Bermuda and zoysia yards in full sun need lots of mowing. This happens most during peak growing months. Skip a week in spring, and you'll get double the clippings. The cut will look rougher too. A good lawn mower makes a real difference in cut quality.[1] Waiting too long also lets weeds grow in thin spots.
